INHALE / EXHALE
In May 2023, I returned to California and the Pacific Ocean, a central muse in my work. This journey brought me back to the places that set me on the path of becoming an artist in 2017. As I rediscovered these landscapes, old and new, I recognized the profound changes within myself since that transformative trip. The landscapes, too, had evolved, mirroring my own growth.
Gathering pigments foraged from the earth, I returned to my studio with renewed inspiration. As I began to paint, a surprising palette of neutral and warm earth tones emerged, echoing a sense of nostalgia.
inspired by the colours of the earth
the ebb and flow of the sea
the inhale
the exhale
and the beautiful cycles
we find ourselves in
The ever-changing nature of the ocean and the ebb and flow of the tides has always captivated me.
IF THE EARTH COULD BREATHE, THIS IS WHERE IT’S LUNGS WOULD BE.
I envision the meeting point of the earth and sea, the constant rhythm of the ocean surf, as a representation of the inhale and the exhale. I feel a kinship with the ocean. Like her, I am a force of nature, constantly evolving and changing, my edges reshaping with the passage of time. The colours of the soil and the misty mornings along the coast have left their mark on me, just as they have on the landscapes that inspired them. This is not only a place of peace, but also one of reinvention.
Returning to the places that have profoundly inspired me, I find myself transformed, just as the landscapes have evolved over time. Nostalgia washes over me, intertwined with the realization that change is inevitable. In the brief pause between the inhale and the exhale, the space between the rise and fall of the tides, I find myself savouring these moments before the cycle continues.
“Inhale / Exhale” is a series of original oil paintings conveying the rhythm of the sea as a metaphor for the beautiful cycles of life we find ourselves in. Through these paintings, I hope to pull you back to the present, to remind you of the beauty that exists in the spaces between breaths, and to celebrate the resilience of the human spirit in the face of life’s constant ebb and flow.
MAY YOU FIND YOUR OWN JOURNEY REFLECTED IN THESE PAINTINGS;
THE INHALE, THE EXHALE, AND THE MOMENTS IN BETWEEN.
